Science Communication for Planetary Health (SciCoPH)
Building science journalism is pivotal to tackling planetary health.
This program considers how Indonesian journalists can best collaborate with scientists to advance effective science communication. The University of Sydney and Universitas Airlangga—in partnership with the Society of Indonesian Science Journalists—will bring science journalists, science communication experts, and bioscientists together to evaluate best practices of collaboration, uses of open data, and knowledge transfer to advance a set of best practice Guidelines. Core activities involve a workshop in Surabaya and a symposium in Sydney.
During the workshop, distinguished Indonesian science journalist Dyna Rochmyaningsih (Knight Science Journalism Fellow 2023–24, MIT, Cambridge) and current executive director of SISJ Melvinas Priananda will guide participants on how to identify stories and link it to broader issues in (global) society. Other sessions by academic instructors will also cover conceptual issues in planetary health, key problems in open science initiatives focused on health within developing countries, the challenges of mis/disinformation, and integrated approaches to science communication.
At the joint workshop scheduled for 7-8 November 2024 in Surabaya, participants will have an opportunity to develop their projects with theme instructors from the Society of Indonesian Science Journalism (SISJ), Airlangga University, the Indonesia International Institute for Life Sciences (i3L), the University of Indonesia, and the University of Sydney. This collaboration will help strengthen relationships between early-career and established journalists and science communication experts and help build capacity for the next generation of science journalists in Indonesia.
