CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Science Communication for Planetary Health (SciCoPH) Workshop

7-8 November, Surabaya

Sponsors: Australia-Indonesia Institute, Sydney Southeast Asia Centre, and the Society for Indonesian Science Journalism

Hosted by: Institute of Indian Ocean Crossroads (AIIOC), Universitas Airlangga

Key instructors: Dyna Rochmyaningsih, Melvinas Priananda, Arli Aditya Parikesit, Ilham Akhsanu Ridlo, Dimas Laksmana, Sonja van Wichelen

BACKGROUND:

Focusing on planetary health, the Surabaya workshop considers how Indonesian journalists can best collaborate with scientists to advance effective science communication. The University of Sydney and Universitas Airlangga—in partnership with the Society of Indonesian Science Journalists—will bring together science journalists, science communication experts, and bioscientists together to mentor participants in how best to collaborate with scientists, use open data, and disseminate knowledge. Program participants will develop a deeper understanding of planetary health and the ethical challenges of open data practices in the Indonesian health and environment sector. Sessions will draw from cross-disciplinary analyses and insights in History, Anthropology, Sociology, Political Economy, Critical Public Health, and Science and Technology Studies.

Up to 10 early-career science journalists will complete a writing project relevant to their interests. A distinguished team of instructors will brief participants on how best to identify, develop, and pitch their stories during an online orientation session. During the workshop in Surabaya, participants will give a short presentation of their project. Participants will have the opportunity to share and learn from each other as they develop their projects. This will help build capacity for the next generation of science journalists in Indonesia.

Keywords for the workshop include: planetary health, global health, one health, digital health, open science, bioscience, bioinformatics, climate change, resources and extractivism, biodiversity.

HOW TO APPLY:

Applications should include:

  • A pitch (300 words max) of a story related to any of the keywords, which you plan to develop through participation in the program and workshop (in Indonesian or English)

  • A 1-page CV

  • A biographical statement (200 words max) about your background and achievements

Successful applicants will be expected to submit a 800-word draft of their story that they plan to develop at the Workshop. This draft story will be due for submission prior to the workshop by October 2024. All participants will be assigned a mentor from the group of instructors and will also be expected to discuss their draft during the workshop.
